Ag-AgCl vs Metal Electrodes

Ag-AgCl vs Metal Electrodes for Precision Measuring

Sintered silver/silver chloride electrodes are recognized worldwide as a stable, low noise reference electrode. It is reversible, which means it can pass an electric current without changing the chemical environment in the immediate vicinity of the electrode. This is not true of metal electrodes.

Ag-AgCl Electrodes

Precision Measurement of Bioelectric Signals. These electrodes have superior qualities in: baseline stability, freedom from artifact, corrosion and moisture resistance

WHY SILVER-SILVER CHLORIDE (Ag-AgCl)

Ag-AgCl electrodes are recognized all over the world for their low polarization, low DC offset, low drift and low noise. Ag-AgCl is virtually non-toxic because very few free silver ions can exist to cause tissue damage. A stable, low noise reference electrode.

Necessary for the detection and measurement of bioelectric signals, probing with electrodes for signals in live tissues and electrolytes is not simple and direct whenever plain metal electrodes interface with an iconic medium to detect electric signals.  Specifically, errors include: polarization, DC offset voltage, drift and noise. These errors often completely mask the bioelectric signal.

Our sintered silver/silver chloride EEG electrodes are thermodynamically reversible, they exhibit low noise and theoretically zero electrode polarization impedance effects. They have much lower DC offset potentials than metal electrodes and provide excellent low frequency response. This reversibility requires a soluble chloride containing electrolyte gel or paste such as EEG paste.
